SHELTER STAFF AND SHERRIFS MAY DENY ENTRY AT THEIR DISCRETION

STATE MANDATED SHELTER RULES APPLY:

NO WEAPONS

  • The possession of any type of weapon within the shelter is prohibited.

  • This includes, but is not limited to, guns, knives, and any other item deemed a weapon by shelter security. Failure to comply with this rule may result in immediate eviction​.

NO SMOKING, ALCOHOL, OR DRUGS

  • The use of alcohol or any illegal drug while residing within the shelter may result in immediate eviction.​

  • Smoking is permitted in designated areas outside of the shelter only.​

REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS:

  • Any individual listed in the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry, as defined by the Virginia Code, Chapter 9, who enters the shelter is required to notify the shelter management of his/her registry status

ELECTRONICS USE:

  • Set all electronics to vibrate or silent mode.

  • Take calls outside of the dormitory areas.

  • Keep volumes low or use headphones.

  • Be mindful of the content on your device.

  • Do not take pictures of people without their permission.

PORT WINTER SHELTER

(People Offering Resources Together)

PORT is an emergency winter shelter with the intent to house the homeless on the coldest nights of the year, ensuring no one dies on the streets.

Starting in 1991 - now in its 33rd year, PORT serves upwards of 120 people per night for a total of 20 weeks during the winter.

LINK of Hampton Roads, which operates the People Offering Resources Together (PORT) winter shelter program in Newport News, has partnered with Riverside Health. A registered nurse will be in PORT locations seven nights per week to provide health screenings, care for minor injuries and illnesses and provide referrals, if needed.
