As the winter months approach, LINK of Hampton Roads is proud to announce the opening of the 2024-2025 PORT Winter Shelter. This essential program provides a safe, warm place for those experiencing homelessness to rest, recharge, and find support during the harshest season of the year.
Starting November 6, 2024, the PORT Winter Shelter will run until March 26, 2025, with the generous partnership of local churches, Riverside Health, and our community.
A Community Coming Together
Each week, a different local church will open its doors to serve as a temporary shelter, ensuring individuals and families have a safe space throughout the winter. This year’s schedule includes 20 weeks of dedicated service, starting with Parkview Baptist Church and ending with New Beech Grove Baptist Church. You can view the full schedule [here](insert link or provide details on accessing the schedule).
More Than Just Shelter
Thanks to our partnership with Riverside Health, guests will have access to vital health services every evening from 6:15 p.m. to 11:15 p.m. Registered nurses will provide temperature checks, health assessments, and assistance with scheduling medical appointments. Lyft transportation is also available for those needing to access nearby clinics and health facilities.
How You Can Help
The PORT Winter Shelter is a community-driven initiative, and we need your support to make it a success! Here are ways you can contribute:
Volunteer: Assist with setting up, meal prep, or providing a listening ear to guests.
Donate Supplies: Hygiene products (toothpaste, soap, shampoo), winter clothing, and non-perishable foods are always in high demand.
Sponsor a Night: Local organizations and businesses can make a significant impact by sponsoring a shelter night.
Why It Matters
For many in our community, the PORT Winter Shelter is more than just a roof over their heads—it’s a lifeline during a challenging time. By providing essentials like food, shelter, and medical care, we can ensure our neighbors are supported with dignity and compassion when they need it most.
